ADHD Is Genetic (Yes, You Probably Got It from One of Your Parents) 🙄 (sorry) If you have ADHD, chances are at least one of your parents does too, whether they know it or not. And so many adults only realize they have ADHD when they recognize it in their children first. (facts! especially women with inattentive type) ADHD brains are highly sensitive to stimulation and seek dopamine like it’s oxygen.

Where Does it Come From?

Three Types of ADHD

1. Hyperactivity-Impulsive Type

(cant' sit still edition)

Hyperactivity isn’t just running around like a caffeinated toddler. It shows up in different ways:

2. Inattentive Type

(The “Head-in-the-Clouds” Edition)

This is the under-diagnosed type, especially in girls and women.

3. Combined Type

(The Full-Strength ADHD Experience)

Congratulations! You won the ADHD jackpot. 🎉 (this is me)

Why Labels Matter

Every time someone says “You don’t need a label”, an ADHD adult somewhere loses their last functional pen. (And they’re probably still looking for it.) I get it. There’s this idea that labels are limiting. That we don’t need to pathologize every personality trait. That it’s better to just “deal with it” instead of “getting stuck in a diagnosis.” But here’s the problem: If you don’t know what you’re working with, you’re constantly working against yourself. ADHD Isn’t just a Personality Type, It’s a Neurodevelopmental Condition For years, many of us were labeled “lazy,” “irresponsible,” “too much,” or “not living up to our potential.” We were expected to function in a world built for neurotypical brains. So we masked, forced ourselves to fit, and berated ourselves when we failed. Without a label, I would have spent my life thinking: •Why do I struggle with simple tasks everyone else does effortlessly? •Why can’t I stay on top of deadlines no matter how hard I try? •Why am I either hyperfocused or completely checked out? Without a diagnosis, I would have kept trying to force my brain into a mold it wasn’t designed for. A Label Gives You a Framework, Not an Excuse Knowing you have ADHD isn’t about saying: ❌ “Oh well, guess I just can’t function in the world.” It’s about saying: ✅ “Okay, my brain works differently—so I need different strategies.” A label helps you: ✨ Understand how your mind works (so you can work WITH it, not against it). ✨ Find tools that ACTUALLY help (instead of forcing yourself into neurotypical methods). ✨ Stop blaming yourself for things that were never about willpower. ✨ Advocate for the support you need.

Why Labels Matter
Pirate Ship

A Pirate Ship in a Storm

Having ADHD isn’t like driving a car with a broken GPS—it’s like being the captain of a pirate ship with half a map, no compass, and a crew that keeps dropping your treasure overboard. On a good day? You’re charting new territories, hyperfocusing on your next great adventure, and running on pure adrenaline. On a bad day? You’re adrift at sea with no wind, no direction, and a brain full of cannonball-sized regrets for every abandoned project, forgotten task, or impulse decision that led you straight into the Bermuda Triangle of “Why am I like this?” And no matter how hard you try to steer the ship, there are days when your executive function mutinies and leaves you spinning in circles, wondering why you’re scrubbing the deck instead of actually sailing anywhere.

Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria

If you’ve ever felt crushed by even the smallest bit of criticism, or like an offhand comment from a friend could send you into a tailspin of self-doubt and despair, congratulations! You may be experiencing Rejection Sensitivity Dysphoria (RSD). RSD isn’t just feeling bad about rejection, it’s feeling obliterated by it. It’s an over-the-top, all-consuming emotional response to perceived criticism, disapproval, or failure. And it’s so common in ADHD that it might as well be listed as a symptom. What RSD Feels Like: 💥 A casual critique from your boss suddenly means you’re terrible at your job and should quit immediately. 💥 A slow text response from a friend = they hate you and you should just disappear into the sea. 💥 A minor mistake? Might as well be a full-blown catastrophe in your brain. And the worst part? It happens fast. One second, you’re fine. The next, you’re mentally packing your bags and emotionally self-exiling yourself from all human contact.

PCOS how it affects the brain

ADHD, The Science

For a long time, ADHD was considered a hyperactive little boy problem. When I was diagnosed in 1976, they barely even recognized that girls could have it. The official belief back then? 🛑 ADHD was something kids outgrew—usually by puberty. 🛑 Girls didn’t really get ADHD, they just “daydreamed.” As you might imagine… 👩‍🔬 Science had some catching up to do. Thankfully, in the last few decades, we’ve learned a LOT more about ADHD—especially how it shows up in adults, how it affects women, and why the name is absolute garbage.
